Putting Your Kids at Risk
The United States can pretty likely keep its guns and still end the near-daily string of civilian massacres like the one at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore.
But if that is what we as a nation want, then weapons industry-sponsored rallies like the one recently featured on the Tribune's front page are probably not helpful to that end.
The people who own and profit from the multibillion-dollar-a-year weapons industry and its lobby - the National Rifle Association - do not live in towns like Lewiston. They live in gated suburbs with private guards, and their kids go to private schools.
They disingenuously equate sensible regulation of weapons of mass murder with "Obama taking away your guns" because it sells more guns, plain and simple.
If you need a license to drive a car, by what logic do violently crazy individuals get to amass secret unlicensed arsenals and then use them to massacre school kids?
That's freedom?
To be blunt, cowards like the young man who killed the students in Roseburg do not need to be egged on and validated as defenders of freedom and liberty.
For a sheriff and a mayor to place political point-scoring above common-sense public safety is unconscionable. Are these heroes prepared to explain that, due in part to their own political grandstanding, the region's school kids should be prepared to die on any given day, and so should say a last goodbye to their families each day when they go off to school?
