MOSCOW - Idaho citizens need Democratic state legislators and leadership for a return to properly funded education, living wages and improved treatment of mental illness, a former Moscow legislator told 200 Saturday evening.
Former seven-term Moscow Rep. Shirley Ringo said changing the heavily Republican Idaho Legislature is a tall challenge, but is possible in elections ahead.
Accepting the Nez Perce County Democrats' fourth Cecil D. Andrus Statesmanship award, Ringo said she accepted when told no, she didn't "have to be nice from now on." Rather, she said, "I will stick with my values."
Namesake four-term former Gov. Andrus said Ringo's unsuccessful 2014 congressional election against U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador was conducted with "style, with grace."
Andrus said the past 10 years of Republican domination in the Idaho Legislature has harmed education "and that has to change." Democrats, he said, must campaign by caring about living wages, fair treatment of women and protection of our children.
Three Nez Perce County Democrats were recognized at the banquet at the Clearwater River Casino. Honored were Kay Gaines, Volunteer of the Year; Colleen Mahoney, Lifetime Achievement; and Rising Star, Jesse Maldonaldo, a Lewiston City councilor.
