As we slowly drift toward the heat death of the universe, we need
to understand that some localities, the ones within which we
participate, require extra organizing energy to preserve and conserve
the intelligent values we hold dear. Unfortunately, we are not as often
as is necessary applying that sort of energy where it would do some good.
You may have heard of families and friends staging an intervention,
an event in the life of a loved one to present collectively evidence of
folly, misdeeds, drug addiction, etc., and to demand a halt to
undesirable behaviors immediately, if not sooner, and a personal
rerouting onto recovery road at the nearest on-ramp, which happens to be
right here.
Empowerment for this sort of activity needs to be made available to
"outside directors" of organizations that have significant public
impacts. (You probably know a few.) There is more and more irrational
nonsense being allowed not only its fifteen minutes of fame, but
significant controlling influences within organizations with critical
impacts on the lives of significant numbers of people. Interventions
are needed.
Our cultural drift is not preventing us from floating closer to the
cowardice of our convictions, a geography that allows us to recognize
our problems, while not encouraging us to be as confidently capable as
we imagine ourselves to be to design and implement solutions to the
problems that represent the difference between our ideal state and the
increasingly obnoxious realities we too frequently experience and
observe reported.
Have we become a nation sufficiently tolerant of devil worshipers
who are fervent enough to host their idols, or who are at least
persistent enough to write articles boasting about their fantasies? Can
we not declare insanity when it is obvious, and incarcerate it for
treatment, absent any responsible guardians willing to accept remedial
responsibilities?
