 When the Great Oz Speaks, Should You Listen?
 
Dr. Mehmet Oz, of the popular syndicated television show, is back in the news. Last week, a group of 10 doctors from around the country called for his removal from the faculty of Columbia University, where he is vice chair of the Department of Surgery, citing his promotion of "quack treatments and cures," among other offenses. In response, Dr. Oz declared that he will "not be silenced" and went on the offensive against his critics.

This is hardly the first time that Dr. Oz has stirred up controversy. Last year, a senate panel harshly admonished him for making unsubstanti­ated weight-loss claims and touting dubious products on his show. And a few months ago, a study in BMJ reported that about half the claims and recommendations made on his show had no supporting evidence or ran contrary to the best evidence available.

Here, Dr. John Swartzberg, Chair of the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter Editorial Board, weighs in on "the Dr. Oz effect."
