City of Moscow Tree Commission to host Moscow Arbor Day Ceremony

April 23, 2015 (Moscow, Idaho) - The City of Moscow Tree Commission will be hosting the annual Arbor Day ceremony and tree planting at 1:00 pm, Friday, April 24, 2015 at the Moscow Library, located at Jefferson and First Street, along the First Street side of the library.  The City's 22nd annual Tree City USA Award will be acknowledged and presented by Robert Barkley, a Private Forestry Specialist from the Idaho Department of Lands, Ponderosa Office; Council President Dan Carscallen will read the annual Arbor Day Proclamation, and 5th graders from J. Russell elementary school will be in attendance and will share their Arbor Day excitement.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the ceremony and help plant the Arbor Day "Accolade Elm" tree, a newer variety of elm that is resistant to Dutch elm disease. After the planting, attendee's will have the opportunity to take home a free tree seedling courtesy of the Tree Commission. The following seedlings will be available to choose from: Big tooth Maple, Black Cherry, Bur-Gambel Oak, and Subalpine Fir.

The Tree Commission is also seeking new members to join the Commission in its endeavors to promote the City's Urban Forest and educate the public as to the benefits of strong and healthy trees. Interested applicants are encouraged to fill out and submit a Commission application to Mayor Bill Lambert for consideration. The Commission meets on the first Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. and is regularly involved in community outreach projects including the Farmer's Market, Arbor Day, and other tree related events.
