> SUNNYVALE TO SELMA
> On Sunday, March 7, 1965 I was a fidgeting seven-year old at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sunnyvale, CA. Twenty-three hundred miles away, in Selma, AL state troopers took their clubs to the skulls of peaceful protesters while I dropped a dime in the offering plate with my Brylcreem-y fingers. Two nights later, I was tracing Family Circus comics in my room on Coleraine Court while James Reeb, a Unitarian minister who’d arrived in Selma from Boston, was beaten senseless by white segregationists. And as he died in a Birmingham hospital two days after that, I jumped my Stingray off the curb at Panama Elementary School.
>
> I suppose you could describe my involvement in the Civil Rights Movement of of the 60’s as “tangential.”
>
> Fifty years later, i.e. two weeks ago, I drove through Selma on the way to my show in Montgomery. “I wonder if I’ll see the bridge,” I said to myself. Then I said, “You idiot! You’re going from Selma to Montgomery. You’ll drive the whole route!”
>
>
>
> The Republican Congress got into a little PR trouble for not planning to send anyone to the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of Bloody Sunday. Which wasn’t fair because originally, they'd planned to send a bunch of representatives to wait at the other end of the bridge. The event was an education for a lot of younger Republicans who thought Martin Luther King’s last name was “Junior Boulevard.”

> As I drove through Selma, I thought about my own long march from Sunnyvale, and I asked that all-important Social Justice question: “Why me?” Why was I born who I was, when I was, where I was? I was born a healthy white male to a loving family in a time of unprecedented affluence in suburban California in the United States of America. I would have to try SO HARD to fuck that up. Honestly, I would have to work day and night with every ounce of strength and cunning to blow those advantages. Such is my burden, oh Lord.
>
> And if anyone says the Voting Rights Act has outlived its usefulness, I would remind them that the march from Selma to Montgomery took place on what was known then, and what is still known as the “Jefferson Davis Highway.”

> ONE OF THE FOUR MOST FOREMEN
>
> As you know, I had a folk group in the last millenium. I formed my satirical quartet The Foremen in the late 80’s and from the very start, we had a rock-solid foundation with Denny Croy on the stand-up bass. Denny’s impeccable musicianship (and irrepressible punmanship) saw us into the 90’s, and even when Andy Corwin assumed the bass-playing duties live, we brought Denny in for most of our recording sessions for Reprise. Why? ‘Cause he’s all about that bass.
> Recently, Denny underwent radiation and chemotherapy. He’s on the mend, but he reports, “this cancer diagnosis came on the heels of my wife Lawrence Lebo's heart surgery. To say the least, we are drowning in medical costs…” So, this month, Metaphor Records is featuring our “Best of the Foremen” CD, and we’ll be sending half of the proceeds to Denny’s medical fund.
>
> The “Best of The Foremen” CD is 16 cuts of twangling instruments, knife-edged four-part harmonies and biting, hilarious satire culled from the group’s two CD’s on Metaphor Records, plus a special bonus section of long lost gems from the archives.

>
> ORDER “BEST OF THE FOREMEN” HERE.
>
>
> If you’d like to help Denny more directly, you could make out a check to “Denny Croy” and mail it to: 18375 Ventura Blvd, #221, Tarzana, CA 91356.
