Meet one of Scotland's rarest cats - Harry the MALE tortoiseshell

THIS unwanted moggy could be Scotland’s rarest cat – because he’s a MALE tortoiseshell.

Twelve-week-old Harry has defied genetics by being one of the few toms in the world with the distinctive black and orange markings.

He was handed into Lothian Cat Rescue in Bonnyrigg after his owners realised they were allergic to his fur.

And his rare genes have raised eyebrows among staff at the home.

Nicola Zelent has been a warden at the animal centre for 19 years.

She said: “It’s very rare to get a male. Harry shouldn’t be fertile, but we won’t know for another 12 weeks.

“There has never been a male that has been fertile – and if he was, Harry would be worth a lot of money.”

There are around 8million pet cats in the UK and only a couple each year are born male tortoiseshell.

The vet who identified Harry’s gender said it was the first time she had come across a male tortoiseshell.

Margaret Riddell said: “When I heard the cat was called Harry, I said to the owners, ‘I think that might have to be a Harriet’.

“I had to change my words when I discovered it was male. I’ve never seen one before and I’ve been a vet for more than 30 years.”
