FWIW, I'd echo Buffett's comments.  If there are serious risks about the pipeline, those need to be addressed and mitigated.  If not, then we just keep the status quo.

The vote was a temporary win for Obama's buddy Warren Buffet. Most of the oil is now shipped on rail lines he owns and is several times more expensive than the pipe line would be.Roger

Pity the map you link to doesn't show all the other pipelines that already cross this patch of America. (including a very long stretch of the existing XL pipeline) Another nice addition would be all the roads and rail lines which carry items far more hazardous and far more likely to encounter a problem that would result in a spill.

How is an enclosed pipeline running from Alberta Canada to the gulf coast affecting our nation's water supply?

I don't know what kinds of land usage deals have been made for the pipeline, so I can't really speak about the First Nation people's objections, but as far as the water problems are concerned, you are protesting in the wrong place. Protest the frakkin' frackers, not the pipeline builders.

Canada will continue to extract from the tar sands, the product will continue across US soil via truck and rail and/or be piped to BC for tanker shipment, and the end result will still be turned into fuel for the world market. Congratulations on saving the planet. It seems to me that the biggest winner will be the folks that administer unemployment benefits, food stamps, and of course your beloved leader. g  On Wed, Nov 19, 2014 at 9:28 AM, Tom Hansen <thansen at moscow.com> wrote:

This was largely just a game of political chess. This bill was being trumpeted by Louisiana Democrat Senator Mary Landrieu in a last ditch effort to try and demonstrate that she had enough influence over her own party to get the bill through the Senate. She failed, so she's toast and she'll lose her runoff election to Republican Bill Cassidy who sponsored the House version of the bill. Not that she necesssarily would have won the had the Senata bill been passed anyway. The Republicans will push this through in the next session when they have the majority and then Obama can veto it if he so wishes. From: moscowcares at moscow.com
