I remember you sent out that screed about dividing up the country, and I responded with this. So here it is once again.

I just heard that most of the AIDS patients and divorces are also in the Red States.

So some of you patriotic Americans in Red States are so mad that a Kenyan, Muslim, socialist black man got elected President of the USA for a second time that you want to demonstrate your patriotism by seceding from the United States of American? Go ahead. Make our day.
But be careful what you wish for. Here's how it could go down, and it might be so pretty for you after all is said and done.
We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs.
You get backwoods crystal meth labs.
We get Intel, Microsoft and Apple. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue. You get to pay your fair share for once.
Speaking of all those federal taxes you love to hate. Most of it comes from us and goes to you. So stop talking nonsense about how "It's our money, not the government's money". Of the 19 states that send more money to Washington than they get back in benefits, 14 are Blue. And of 31 states that get more money back from the Feds than they pay in taxes, 23 are Red. It's not your money. It's our f**cking money. So from here on out, you can pay for your own damn roads and bridges.
Which state do you think has the lowest divorce rate? It's Taxachusetts, the first state to recognize gay marriage. Think that's some aberration? How about this? 9 of the 10 lowest divorce rates are in the Blue states. And where are the highest divorce rates? 10 of the top 10 are Red.
But gay people getting married is going to ruin the family for you? Seems like you're ruining it pretty well on your own.
So we get a bunch of happy families, straight and gay. You get a bunch of single moms and deadbeat dads.
With the Blue States in hand we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve Texas wines at state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Stanford, Cal Tech, UC Berkeley, and MIT.
With the Red States you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans and their projected health care costs, 92 percent of all US mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100% of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, and Bob Jones University.
We would get the West Coast, all of the Northeast and the upper Midwest.
You would get Texas, Oklahoma and all the former slave states.
We would keep Hawaii too, the foreign country with warm water and beautiful beaches where Barack Hussein Obama was born without a birth certificate.
You can have Alaska and stare at Russia from your front porches.
To be fair, we may have to split up some states.
You get North Florida. We get South Florida. After all, what would you want with all those gay people in South Beach and old Jews in Miami?
We get North Virginia. You get South Virginia. To be fair, we'll let you keep the University of Virginia. Go Cavaliers! Plus you need at least one place to educate some leaders who believe in science.
But Austin, Atlanta and New Orleans get to be their own Blue city/states, sort of like West Berlin before the Wall came down. We'll even pay to move the capital of Texas from Austin to W's hometown of Midland, where as one native recently put it, "There used to be one Democrat in town, but I think she died".
We might even merge with Canada. That way we get single-payer healthcare, solvent banks, the Royal Canadian Mounties, and Ryan Gosling (eat your hearts our Red-nation women).
To sum up briefly:
We get Bruce Springsteen, Jay Z and Beyonce. You get Ted Nugent and Meatloaf.
Plus Willie Nelson gets to park his bus anywhere he likes in the Blue America.
We get Elizabeth Warren. You get Todd Aiken. (Hey, we'll even keep Chris Christie. He's too large to move, anyway.)
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.
We get the New York Philharmonic. You get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
We get Oprah. You get Paula Deen.
And Blue America will have an easy repatriation policy for the ancestors of slaves still stuck in the former Confederate states, as well as a path to citizenship for undocumented workers and their children from both Red and Blue America who have worked hard/studied hard and put down roots. We'll even have a 21st century version of "40 acres and a mule" with education, job training and work at a fair wage for those who need it. (But here's a warning: good luck getting your crops picked, your kids asses wiped, and your pools cleaned without a bunch of low-paid undocumented workers.)
Any Red-nation NBA team that wants to gets to move to a Blue state city without its own team. Hey, how about them World Champion Pittsburgh Thunder?
And the New York Jets will send you back Tim Tebow for a player to be named later. [update to 2013: We now want 10 players in return for "Drop to Your Knees" Tim.]
So, as we said at the start. You want to secede? Go ahead. Make our Day. But be careful what you wish for. You might not be so happy if you actually got it. If you ask nicely, we might even take you back.

1991 I went into the Navy. I did boot camp  at Great Lakes Illinois. Until I blew my knee out on a run well I guess you could say a fall down some stairs but a run makes it sound like I am less clumsy.

I don't understand all the personal attacks just because I disagree with you all don't mean I am a bad person. Tom I worked with you at the University of Idaho we use to take Jabs at one person all the time about him going to BSU.

I should not have to explain anything to anybody of who I am where I am from and anytime you would like to sit down have a cup of coffee or lunch to have a civil conversation please let me know.

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, regressive, Marxists, and Obama supporters, et. al.:

We have stuck together since the late 1950s for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course.

4. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA, and the military.

5. We'll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar, and bio-diesel.

6. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore, and Rosie O'Donnell. You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them.

7. We'll keep capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart, and Wall Street.

8. You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, food stamps, homeless homeboys, hippies, druggies, and illegal aliens.

Campus security would find it easier to identify the bad guys.  They would be the ones WITH THE GUNS.

Another thing . . .

As weapons are allowed on campus, but not allowed in dorms (billeting quarters owned and maintained by the university), those students living in fraternities and sororitues will find it easier to carry weapons to and from campus, as sororities and fraternities are privately owned.

This, also, could open a whole new "bag of worms" in town.  Students residing off-campus will also find it easier to carry weapons to and from their off-campus residence to and from campus.

As I said before . . . kinda adds a whole new dimension to Rush Week, huh? And how 'bout them jello-shot and other drinking competitions at the Champions tavern.  I can hardly wait for their new year's party.  Can you?

Are you suggesting, Mr. Rumelhart, that, as the new law goes into affect, it should be considered acceptable behavior for somebody who expresses a desire to commit suicide to bring a handgun on campus, conceivably to kill others before taking his/her own life?

In my personal opinion, the University of Idaho appears to be taking a rational approach to this while NIC appears to be freaking out about it.  Bullet proof vests?  Really?  Arming their security personnel?  If a few retired police officers and enhanced concealed carry permit holders frighten them so much I almost hate to bring up the thought that criminals don't necessarily follow the gun laws on campuses and that there might be people with guns on campus RIGHT NOW!  Let's hope that the NIC leadership doesn't read this.  Tanks are expensive.

Public colleges and universities in Idaho are getting ready to comply with a new state law they strongly opposed: allowing concealed weapons to be carried on campus.
The law takes effect July 1 and applies to people with an enhanced license to carry concealed weapons, along with retired law enforcement officers. College leaders universally opposed the law, but pro-gun rights lawmakers pushed it through the Legislature this year.
Now college administrators and campus security departments are preparing for the new reality: guns in lecture halls, labs, offices, cafeterias – everywhere but dormitories and entertainment venues with seating for more than 1,000, like stadiums and auditoriums.
“We intend to follow the law. Really we don’t discuss the merits of the law. That was done, the law passed. We’re talking about implementation,” said Matt Dorschel, executive director of public safety and security at the University of Idaho in Moscow.
Higher education leaders are revising campus weapons policies to comply with the new law, although bans on openly carrying guns are expected to remain in effect.
Some colleges also plan to beef up their security. North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene will provide its security officers with bulletproof vests plus training related to concealed weapon laws, and it may expand its seven-person security force by one full-time and one part-time position.
NIC also is mulling whether to arm its security workers for the first time, said Alex Harris, director of student development.
“I don’t know if we’ll go that direction, but it’s definitely out there and we’re considering it,” Harris said.
Another option, he said, is to work with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department to station a school resource officer on campus, similar to the officers present in middle and high schools.
All of these measures are unforeseen expenses at a time of budget cuts due to falling enrollment, Harris said. NIC’s enrollment this year dropped 11 percent from the previous school year – a trend that corresponds to the improving economy.
The vests will cost about $8,000, and arming and training security officers would cost $10,000 a year. The new security officers, or a school resource officer, would cost about $60,000 a year.
“The budget process this year, without this, has been difficult for the campus as a whole,” Harris said. “It does make for some tough decisions.”
The 12,000-student University of Idaho anticipates no significant changes for its security force. The Moscow Police Department can respond quickly to emergencies on campus, and a university task force implementing the new law is not likely to recommend arming campus security, Dorschel said.
“We don’t think that anything about the law would impact our need to have other armed responders on campus,” he said.
NIC’s College Senate, which includes faculty, staff and students, approved new language for the school’s weapons policy last week. The president’s Cabinet is expected to take the changes to the board of trustees Wednesday, and the board will vote on the changes by the end of June.
“The policy is the easy part because basically we just have to make sure we are abiding by the new state law,” Harris said.
The law allows colleges to continue to prohibit guns in dormitories and public entertainment venues with a seating capacity of at least 1,000. At NIC, that covers three buildings: the student residence hall, Christianson Gymnasium and the Schuler Performing Arts Center in Boswell Hall.
It’s not clear yet if the new law also extends to college facilities off campus. For NIC, that includes its Workforce Training Center in Post Falls and satellite centers in Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry and Kellogg. NIC is awaiting a legal opinion on that.
The UI task force is focused on updating the university policy on weapons, such as identifying which buildings would remain off-limits to guns, Dorschel said. That includes residence halls for about 2,000 students, Memorial Gymnasium, the Kibbie Dome and a ballroom in the student union building.
The task force also is looking at whether to provide more places for licensed weapons holders to store their guns at times they cannot carry them. And the group is exploring whether employees may ask someone if they are carrying a concealed weapon.
“We will make it clear that permit holders are not required to disclose their status as a concealed carry permit holder to another employee,” Dorschel said.
Both colleges will distribute answers to common questions about the new law, such as whether one should alert authorities if they see a gun.
“In general, we don’t want people to hesitate or to assume,” Harris said. “We’re responsible for the safety of our students and our employees, and if that requires us having an uncomfortable conversation with someone who has a permit, then we’ll do it.”
The responsibilities of license holders to keep their weapons concealed, and whether the law extends to off-campus activities, are other points colleges will attempt to address.
“We want to make sure we don’t ignore questions that we get from our community about how this works in practice,” Dorschel said.
People have mixed feelings about guns on campus, Harris said. Some believe the law will enhance safety because those who are permitted to carry guns may be able to respond to a threat, while others worry that more armed responders will only complicate the job of police and security officers.
Also, some employees have told the college they may be more inclined to request a security officer attend difficult conversations, such as terminating an employee or talking with a student who is failing a class, he said.
“I think it’s a matter of taking the temperature once this goes into effect and we start the fall semester to see what things we need to address and how,” Harris said.
