PRESS RELEASE
Moscow Planning and Zoning Commission to Hold Second Community Open House on Accessory Dwelling Units

March 28, 2014 (Moscow, Idaho) - The City of Moscow Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a second public input session on Wednesday, April 2nd from 5:00-6:30pm regarding the potential allowance of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) within the City of Moscow.

ADUs are generally small-scale residential units that are accessory to a single-family home. Also known as granny flats, mother-in-law units, laneway houses, or secondary dwelling units, ADUs were more common in the U.S. prior to the 1960's. Many cities are now realizing several benefits of ADUs including efficient use of existing developed land and public infrastructure, creation of affordable housing opportunities, additional income opportunity for home owners, and the opportunity to care for an elderly or disabled family member in an independent living arrangement.

The Commission conducted the first open house meeting regarding ADUs on January 22, 2014 to provide an opportunity for community members to learn about ADUs and provide input to the Planning and Zoning Commission regarding the potential allowance of ADUs within Moscow. The second public open house meeting on April 2nd will allow the opportunity for community members who were unable to attend the first open house to learn about ADUs. In addition, as the Commission moves toward a recommendation to the City Council regarding ADUs, additional public input is desired on proposed standards and where ADUs could possibly be allowed.

The April 2 meeting will be open house format with poster stations to share information about ADUs and solicit public comment and input. The public is encouraged to visit anytime between 5:00 and 6:30 PM in City Council Chambers of City Hall located at 206 E. Third Street.
