Wow Tom - you're telling us not to jump to any conclusions about desertion and then offer up your own spin on the topic regarding regular promotions in absentia?   How ironically par for the venue.

The ones accusing him of desertion are from a jury pool of his own peers and fellow soldiers.  From CNN - 'they report, you agree':

Whether or not Sergeant Bergdahl deserted his unit, resulting in his capture by the Taliban, is a matter for which the U.S. Army is the sole authority.
Strange, though, Sergeant Bergdahl was never considered to be a deserter.  In fact, PFC Bergdahl, in addition to being maintained on the rolls, was promoted regularly in ABSENTIA.
