Mapping Poverty In The Inland Northwest

The New York Times released an article last week mapping out poverty in the United States. The data was compiled from the Census Bureau of those living below the poverty line. The Census Bureau defined the poverty line as: $23,283/year for a family of four or $11,945 for an individual person under 65.

Taking a look at the Inland Northwest, Whitman County shows up as having the highest percentage of people living in poverty in the state with nearly a third of the population at 32.3% or 12,848 people. Spokane County was listed as having 16% of the population living below the poverty line, or 73,788 people. Larger counties such as King and Pierce on the west side of the state came in at 11.9% or 234,813 people and 12.8% or 101,716 people, respectively.

In Idaho, Kootenai County was listed as have 13.4% or its population or 18,911 people living below the poverty line. Bonner and Boundary County both came in at about 17% of their population, while Latah County right across the state line from Whitman County, came in at 22.1% or 7,739 people living below the poverty line.
