Lamar announces candidacy for county commission
Moscow council member to run for seat held by Tom Stroschein
Moscow City Councilman Tom Lamar announced his plan to run for the Latah County Commission seat in District 2, which includes south Moscow and Genesee.
Lamar, a Democrat, is seeking the seat now held by Commissioner Tom Stroschein, who is not expected to seek re-election.
Lamar said he will bring 24 years of organizational management and seven years of experience in local government service to the office. He also said he intends to promote communities, natural resources and the economy of Latah County as a commissioner.
"We can do better to create a prosperous Idaho with high-paying jobs and thriving communities where our children have the opportunity to stay, find good work and raise their families," Lamar said in a news release.
Lamar also said he would bring "problem solving, budget management, human resources, public policy development, government oversight, natural resources and fundraising skills" to the commission, if elected.
"My experience and familiarity with local government and regional issues will ensure a smooth transition in the county courthouse next January," he said.
Lamar was appointed to the Moscow City Council in June of 2007 to fill a mid-term vacancy. He was elected to a four-year term in November 2007 and re-elected in November 2011.
He is executive director of Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute, a conservation organization and nature center based in Moscow, and he helped establish the Latah Trail Foundation.
Lamar also taught conservation leadership for six years at the University of Idaho.
Candidates can begin filing papers with the county Monday. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. March 14. The primary election will be May 20.
