Or Walter Steed reflecting on his life in Mississippi during the 40s and 50s (unless my math is off, that would make Steed almost 80 years old) as a youth.  I'm guessing that being a white child in Mississippi back then wasn't anywhere near as tough as being a black child in Mississippi during the 40s and 50s.
