PRESS RELEASE
City of Moscow, Legacy Crossing Urban Renewal District Redevelopment Project Receives Grow Smart Award

October 25, 2013 (Moscow, Idaho) - The City of Moscow and Moscow Urban Renewal Agency will be honored as a Grow Smart Award recipients at the November 7, 2013 Idaho Smart Growth - Grow Smart Awards celebration. The award will be given to recognize the public policy and planning endeavors the City and MURA have accomplished with adoption by the Moscow City Council of the Zoning District and Overlay and Design Guidelines in June of 2012.

The Legacy Crossing Project included community visioning and redevelopment planning efforts to guide the redevelopment of a historic agricultural/industrial corridor located between downtown Moscow and the University of Idaho campus to promote urban form mixed use development. The project achieves many smart growth principles including planning for quality infill, mixed use development, transit oriented development, protection of open space, utilization of green building design, affordable housing and rehabilitation or reuse of existing resources.

Jeff Jones, Moscow Urban Renewal Agency Executive Director and City of Moscow Economic Development Specialist says of the honor, "We are thrilled and honored to receive this award and to have our community recognized by Idaho Smart Growth. The continued implementation of the Legacy Crossing Urban Renewal Plan will have the long term effect of revitalizing an underutilized area between the City's downtown and the University of Idaho and facilitate the conditions necessary to support a high-quality, livable urban environment with building at a human scale."

Bill Belknap, Community Development Director explains, "Legacy Crossing presents a unique opportunity to bridge the divide between the University of Idaho and the heart of downtown Moscow. It is rare for communities have such a significant redevelopment opportunity in such a key location, and it is incumbent upon the City that the outcome is a lasting and vibrant development that is an asset to the community for years to come."

Nancy Chaney, Mayor notes, "Moscow can be proud to be on the cutting edge of high-quality, liveable mixed-use development, to meet workforce expectations, today and for the foreseeable future."

Idaho Smart Growth created the Grow Smart Awards program in 2005 to recognize exemplary efforts in planning and development that keep our communities vibrant and our lands healthy. Winners are selected by the Grow Smart Awards Jury made up of community leaders and industry professionals. Jury members are selected based on their knowledge about design, planning and development, transportation, and smart growth principles.

The public is invited to learn more about the projects submitted for the award on Thursday, November 7, at the McCleary Auditorium at Saint Alphonsus in Boise, 5 - 7:30 p.m. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., and program begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at: www.growsmartawards.eventbrite.com<http://www.growsmartawards.eventbrite.com> or by calling 208-333-8066.
