Moscow, Idaho schools celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 9, 2013

October 2, 2013 (Moscow, Idaho) - Seven schools in Moscow plan to join with 36 other participating countries for International Walk to School Day on October 9, 2013.  Participating schools include: Moscow Middle School, Lena Whitmore, A. B. McDonald Elementary, Moscow Charter School, Palouse Prairie School of Expeditionary Learning, J. Russell Elementary, and West Park Elementary.

Students can walk, bike, or roll to school.  To see a map of recommended walking routes to your school, visit www.SR2Smoscow.com<http://www.SR2Smoscow.com> and click on the "maps" tab for interactive and printable maps.  Options for walking to school include leaving from home or from park-and-walk locations located around schools.  Students and parents are invited to join the Walking School Buses coordinated by PTA/PTO leaders and led by parent volunteers.  All Walking School Buses are planned to arrive at school on time.

Approximately 1,500 students from Moscow Schools will be participating in the event along with parents, teachers and community leaders. Mayor Nancy Chaney, Moscow School District Superintendent Greg Bailey, Moscow School District Board members, and City Council members will join the event to help students celebrate. University of Idaho athletes and student volunteers will be at each school to help with the event and continue the celebration.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by Safe Routes to School which is a partner with The City of Moscow and University of Idaho.  Safe Routes to School programs are the result of a series of grants that have provided funding for the following programs:
