On behalf of our students, faculty, staff and nearly 100,000 alumni, we welcome Dr. Chuck Staben as the 18th president of the University of Idaho. The Idaho State Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Staben at a special meeting of the board this morning in Moscow. He will begin leading the university March 1, 2014.
The university has clearly gained a proven leader. Dr. Staben comes to us most recently after serving as the provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of South Dakota, a position he has held since 2008. He previously served in the capacity of vice president for research at the University of Kentucky and as a professor of biology at that institution. He holds a doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Staben begins his presidency as the university looks to mark several milestones, with the anticipated conclusion of the Inspiring Futures capital campaign, the 125th anniversary of the University in 2014. He will play a fundamental role in leading the university's academic programs, dynamic research activities and extensions, community partnerships and initiatives across the state of Idaho.
Staben will take over for Interim President Don Burnett, who has skillfully guided the university since June 2013 when Duane Nellis left the UI for Texas Tech University. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Interim President Burnett, who has served the university capably and with tremendous enthusiasm during this transition period. Interim President Burnett's commitment to the university is remarkable. His appreciation for university history, engaged stewardship of our current programs and clear-eyed anticipation of the university's future has been a winning example of leadership, thoughtfulness and class.
A full biography detailing Dr. Staben</span>'s background and academic history is available on the University of Idaho website.
Please join us in welcoming our new president to the Vandal family!
