"Today, travel between Moscow and Pullman is like a leisurely drive in the country, a pleasant and quick trip between two distinct towns. That may change very soon, however. The Whitman County Planning Commission wants to remake the corridor trip into a regular big-city commute by filling the open spaces with retail, wholesale, and industrial buildings. Soon, I'm afraid, this leisurely drive will have all the charm of a California strip mall, complete with stop-and-go traffic, stoplights, ugly sprawl, fast food joints, anxiety and road rage. As businesses pull out of both Moscow and Pullman seeking the greener pastures of the Corridor, both towns will be left with empty buildings and lower tax revenues. A few landowners, developers and builders will have made some short-term bucks, but our quality of life will have taken another major hit."
