PRESS RELEASE
Title: Moscow Farmers Market Gefilte Trout
Join us Saturday, June 1st for the Moscow Farmers Market on Main Street and in Friendship Square in Downtown Moscow! At Friendship Square live music will be provided by Gefilte Trout at 9:30 a.m.
Six talented musicians make up the band Gefilte Trout. The group features folk music from Eastern Europe, including music in the Jewish klezmer and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) styles.
The klezmer tunes follow a unique musical scale, called ahavo rabboh (abounding love) that was initially used by cantors in Jewish liturgical ceremonies. Since the 1800s, the scale has been used for upbeat dance tunes that are often played at Jewish weddings (e.g., the freylekh, bulgar, sher, hora, kolomeike, waltz). These dance tunes are marked by unique musical ornamentation referred to as "dreydlekh" (spinning tops), which includes slides, a laughing sound, and a sobbing sound. These dreydlekh can be heard in the work of Andy Statman and Yale Strom, as well as in the group Finjan, Yontef, Hot Pstrami, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band.
Gefilte Trout band members include: Bill Voxman (clarinet), Greg Donohoe (upright bass), Bill Thompson (guitar), Bill Thomson (mandolin), Mary Donohoe (percussion and vocals), and Carla Chandler (violin).
Since 2005, Gefilte Trout has played for Chanukah parties, weddings, the Spokane Folk Festival, the Cordelia Church, the Moscow Renaissance Faire, the Moscow Farmers' Market, One-World Café, the Coop, and the Empty Bowl fundraising event for Oxfam.
