PRESS RELEASE
Title: Public Art Call Poetry on Busses

May 1, 2013 - The Moscow Arts Commission and Broadsided Press are sponsoring a call for visual art in response to Robert Wrigley's poem "Spring Is Here" from his new collection of poetry, Anatomy of Melancholy (Penguin 2013).

This call is open only to individuals 18 years of age or older who live in Latah County, Nez Perce County, Asotin County, Whitman County, Nez Perce tribal members, or Coeur d'Alene tribal members.

Deadline for submissions: 5:00 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2013

The winning art will be made into a Broadside-postable art/poetry collaboration-and displayed locally as part of the Poetry on the Busses project that will accompany Moscow's Artwalk this June-as well as appearing on the Broadsided website. Art can be in any media as long as it can be photographed or otherwise presented as a high-resolution JPEG. We encourage visual responses that are non-illustrative but, rather, launch from the poem and, in proximity with it, create a larger whole. For samples of other Broadsides, please see: www.broadsidedpress.org<http://www.broadsidedpress.org>.

Spring Is Here
The umbrellas misfired, the rain broke down,
all the seed-white dandelions were bludgeoned
to a fluffy paste. The bell tower ratcheted
up its terrible black birds. Negotiations
broke out between thunder and cell phones
despite the enormous vee of geese going by.
Someone whispered the secret of the match
to a cigarette, and hail commenced
machine-gunning a delicate wing of smoke.
Cruel world for bathing beauties, though. The clatter
of flip-flops rose like an ovation for the nation
of May, and the Goth boy in his black greatcoat
pale as the Jesus over Rio and similarly stanced,
having raised his arms and brought to the air
not only the wail of the noon whistle
but also the howl of a hound dog leashed to a hydrant,
as though it, in the midst of such majesty,
in the last week of classes, were his wolf.

Applications may be picked up at the Arts Department in Moscow City Hall or downloaded at http://www.ci.moscow.id.us/records/Policy/Poetry-On-Busses.pdf. The Registration Deadline is 5:00pm Monday, May 13, 2013.
