[Vision2020] gun violence debate

Hi Gary,

Nobody in their right mind (who knows you personally) would think of you in
terms of being a coward. I don't think I missed the post wherein you
defend firearm ownership because you are quaking in your boots and live in
fear that somehow (a breakin ??? a beserker???? A lunatic on the loose????)
is a threat to you. I'm not saying that the one in a jillion chance
couldn't happen, but if it did I have a certain degree of confidence that
you are not now, nor have you ever been all hat and no cattle. And, I can't
imagine you being concerned that your weapons match those of the local
police department, the Idaho national guard, and the USMC. Some folks on
this list apparently suffer from gun envy and that's a disease that probably
takes a whole of therapy to sort out. I don't think that's something you'll
be needing to spend money on.

Rose

Speaking strictly for myself and in no way wanting to put words in the mouth
of Mr. Rumelhart, I find it very mildly vexing to be framed as a "coward"
for being a hunter, collector, and general firearms enthusiast. The use of
that term can hardly be seen as anything other than insulting and those who
do or wildly applaud its use are clearly not looking for reasoned discussion
on the topic.

Ok, now I tire of this gun debate. A hammer is not any near as deadly as a
semi-automatic weapon. Sifting through the Second Amendment for a hint of a
right to possess all manner of weaponry is ridiculous and frightening. God
did not give us the Second amendment, nor did God design and give us guns.
Gun manufacturers give us guns. And they want us to buy more guns. Yes, a
gun in every drawer and a chicken in every pot.

People who want to own guns for defense live in fear. From whence does this
fear originate?

>From other people with guns!

We have a gun violence problem the U.S.. no one can deny that. The solution
I often hear is to own more guns.

This creates more fear and a need for more, and more deadly guns to defend
ourselves. Kind of like a national internal arms race.

People who are afraid to live in a civil society without arming themselves
with weapons of mass destruction are cowards.

I am sorry to be so blunt, but I, and a vast majority of my fellow citizens,
want to demonstrate the courage needed to deal with the violence in society
in a logical, civil manner. Let's engage this discussion now. Enough
children and citizens have died.
