Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky remained on the Senate floor for nearly 13 hours on Wednesday as he pressed the Obama administration for more information about potential drone strikes on U.S. soil.
Sen. Rand Paul’s 13-hour filibuster got a one word response from Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday: no.

Paul’s marathon filibuster of John Brennan’s nomination to head the CIA was intended to force the White House for more information about the conditions under which it would justify killing an American citizen on U.S. soil without due process.

Although Holder had previously said such an attack would only be used to prevent a major terrorist attack, Paul demanded clarification that the Obama administration “will not kill Americans that are not in combat.”

Holder’s response on Thursday was two sentences in its entirety.

“It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: ‘Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?’ The answer to that question is no,” he wrote.

Despite its brevity, Paul told CNN he was “quite happy” with Holder’s reply and declared his filibuster a “victory."
