Frozen Berries Recalled after Hepatitis A Outbreak
Pathogen not found in suspected product to date
An outbreak of hepatitis A that has sickened 87 people in eight U.S. states prompted the recall of an organic frozen berry mix, according to federal agencies. Townsend Farms Inc., of Fairview, Ore., on June 4 announced a voluntary recall on the product, which was sold at Costco and Harris Teeter stores, “out of an abundance of caution.” Craig Wilson, vice president for food safety and quality assurance at Costco Wholesale, says the company has contacted some 250,000 members who bought the product.

Salmonella’s Protection Switch
The pathogen is adapting to its environment
The elusive foodborne pathogen Salmonella Typhimurium has developed a unique self-protective mechanism that responds to changes in the environment during its infective period, which may protect it from harm, according to new research from scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). “We didn’t expect to see such a complete switch when the pathogen went from one state to another,” says PNNL's Josh Adkins, PhD.

Reducing the Unique Risks in Sprouts
According to CSPI, 46 outbreaks related to consumption of sprouts were recorded between 1990 and 2011, causing at least 2,500 illnesses. Salmonella and pathogenic E. coli were responsible for the majority of outbreaks, and Listeria monocytogenes the cause of one.
