Zimmerman was advised not to follow Martin.
Here is my take on this . . .
Zimmerman wanted to be a policeman. He wanted to be one so badly that he took up classes to prep him for police academy training.
However, he has a record for an instance of domestic violence (this was discussed in an evidence hearing in the absence of the jury). The police department refused his application.
Zimmerman's next course of action was to become an armed neighborhood watch, which doesn't require much of a background records check.
Trayvor Martin's walk home from 7-11 that day gave Zimmerman an opportunity to prove just how wrong the police were in not accepting him, by apprehending one of those "fucking punks" that "always get away".
After a while of being followed by Zimmerman, Martin (a 17 year-old) became scared. Zimmerman confronted Martin in an intimidating manner. Martin responded.
This gave Zimmerman an opportunity to be the cop he so badly wanted to be. Martin struck at Zimmerman. Zimmerman shot back.
