Senate to debate 4 new teacher union bills
Jan 28, 2013 3:00 p.m.

BOISE, Idaho—A Senate committee has agreed to debate a series of bills intended to roll back the power the teacher unions have in brokering multi-year contracts and fighting salary cuts.

The Senate Education Committee voted along party lines Monday to introduce four new bills being pushed by the Idaho School Boards Association.

Some of the details may look familiar to the Students Come First laws that were repealed at the ballot box in November.

One bill would limit all terms and conditions in a teacher contract to one year, while another would require a local union to have support of more than 50% of teachers to bargain new contracts.

Another bill would repeal a state law that prevents teacher salaries from being reduced from one year to the next.
