Obviously I missed the "debate"! Here are a few reasons why some don't
consider this a real debate. I'm not endorsing all of these reasons,
just saying that they are reasonable considerations that folks will
raise.

First, the sublime: Does reason ever play a role in deciding
fundamental beliefs? Aren't they settled by irrational forces? After
all, how many will walk away from the debate tonight with a new point
of view?

Second, isn't the real debate: Should Doug Wilson decide who (among
the competent, freely choosing, adults) Andrew Sullivan can marry, or
should we leave the decision up to Andrew Sullivan? Suppose we flipped
the names and asked: Should Sullivan decide who (among the competent,
freely choosing, adults) Wilson can marry, or should we leave the
decision up to Wilson? I’m pretty sure about Wilson’s answer to this
last question! Really, this is NOT a debatable issue. The answer is
pretty clear if you just turn the question back on yourself. You
should decide; and so should I; and so should Sullivan. The State
should worry about the debt.

Third, there is this analogy. One might be embarrassed to learn that
one of her relatives went to a debate in the 1880s entitled “Is
Emancipation Good for Society?” From our perspective, it is difficult
to imagine how someone might consider slavery to be a debatable topic.
In any event, one might not want to be THAT relative: the one who
thought that gay marriage was even debatable. I confess, I don't want
to be THAT relative.

Keep in mind we're not talking about morality here. We're talking
about the law. What kinds of general restrictions of behavior can we
place on all people, respecting them as persons, with various creeds,
opinions, and personal beliefs? Following an earlier sentiment
expressed by Mr. Keim, I say the fewer the better! Once you even
consider telling folks who they should marry, you violate this simple
principle.

Best, Joe

Rosemary,
I can't take questions since I will be behind a camera, as well as
directing the other 4 cameras, but perhaps someone else on this list
could bring forward your question. Ideally the question would be
stated more concisely. Would shortening it to this take away from your
question?: "Why have you concentrated your efforts on the topic of
homosexuality and sexual issues? Are there not more important topics
to address?"

Good question!

I'm off to prep some cameras,

many acts/moral failings/crimes that are common not only to your faith
community but in our larger community as well. Pedophilia, alcohol abuse,
domestic violence, adultery, thievery, hypocrisy, and pride all spring
instantly to mind. These are topics that Jesus addressed frequently.
However, he never addressed homosexuality. I would be the last person to
equate Jesus with you (Doug) and to your credit so would you) but given the
pressing problems mentioned above, I wonder why you (Doug) seem hooked on
the topic of sexual orientation? You sneering and hateful use of
pejorative terms ? I won?t repeat them - causes me to wonder about the
source of your interest. What?s the deal? How ?bout a Campus program
with an agenda of imploring your audience to treat all GLBT people with
respect and kindness instead of sneering nastiness? Will you agree to stop
using Beavis and Butthead offensive, childish !
