[Vision2020] Question for the Teachers Out There . . .

Put aside, for a moment, the argument that if we don’t teach cursive old documents will be unreadable....with current technology, that’s not an issue. Also, the experiment with the foreign language is not an argument for teaching cursive, it’s an argument for using tactile and well as visual senses in learning a language. Lines 11 to 15 aren’t impressive either. There are many ways to develop fine motor skills. Learning cursive is only one, but so is any practice which utilizes the movement of one’s fingers in coordination with hand and wrist action. I imagine even keyboarding does that, even though it isn’t the fingers which actually put the print on the paper.

There may be good arguments for mandating cursive, but this bill will probably pass even though those arguments expressed here are just window dressing.

If the educators who teach young children how to write have, through their practice, determined that cursive is a good educational tool for students of today, they will teach cursive. If not, this bill is simply Lyndon Bateman’s way to feed his ego. But I’m betting it will pass, and early childhood teachers will have to ensure all their students learn cursive, even though this may not be the best practice for an individual child.

I know, let’s have a graduation requirement that any student seeking a diploma from an Idaho High School will have to take a comprehensive test on Atlas Shrugged, and provide all the answers in cursive. And s/he will have to do it online.
