PRESS RELEASE
Oversized Loads Expected to Travel through Moscow, Idaho

December 20, 2013 (Moscow, Idaho) - The City of Moscow has received word from the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) that Mammoet, a transport company which has moved oversized loads in the past, is expected to apply for permits through the ITD to transport three oversized loads from Lewiston, north to Coeur d'Alene via US-95, through Moscow, with a destination in Great Falls, Montana. Permits have not yet been applied for, but are expected to be submitted in order to move the loads in mid-to-late January of 2014, according to an ITD District 2 official in Lewiston.

At the request of the Mayor and with the support of the Mayor-elect, the City of Moscow is working to stay informed of the status of these loads in order to assess potential impacts on public safety and emergency response services, street and underground utility infrastructure, and other City interests, including street trees. Information released by ITD to date includes the estimated weight of at least one of the loads (1.6 million pounds), and the approximate dimensions (440 feet long, 27 feet wide, and about 16 feet high). Projected movement of the first load is expected to be scheduled for mid to late January and if approved, would be moved in four shifts to reach its destination in Great Falls, Montana. When in motion, loads are anticipated to travel at about 25 miles per hour, with dead-stop delays. The City has been informed that expected shifts for movement include:

* Shift 1- Lewiston, Idaho to rest area on US-95 at milepost 372

* Shift 2- US-95 milepost 372 to Higgins Point in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

* Shift 3- Coeur d'Alene, Idaho to Wallace, Idaho

* Shift 4- Wallace, Idaho to the Idaho/Montana weigh station about 10 miles into Montana

Because no applications for permit have been submitted to date, traffic plans and related information for transport are not available. The City of Moscow has requested those documents from ITD as soon as they are available.

The City of Moscow is planning to hold a public workshop, and to invite Moscow City and Latah County officials and representatives from the ITD, State and local law enforcement, and the transport company to answer questions relating to the movement of these oversized loads and any potential risks the loads may pose to public safety and City and County public infrastructure. The date for that workshop has not yet been determined and will be scheduled as soon as information has been provided by ITD.
