Survivor cats recovering after house explosion

DENNIS TWP. -
It was almost a month ago that a house explosion in Cape May County critically injured the couple living there. Now, weeks later, as they continue to recover, so do their family pets, which were initially missing, and even feared dead. This is their amazing story of survival.

Two year old Daisy loves to talk, and sure has a story to tell.

She and her adopted sister, Dusty, are survivors. “She really is a great cat,” said the veterinarian as the cat sat through a daily saline bath, “she's really made it taking care of her very, very easy.”

Both cats survived the explosion that decimated their Villas home on November 7th, which critically injured their owners Jim and Evelyn McCarty. Dusty was pulled from the rubble and taken to the Ocean View Veterinary Hospital, where a month later she's still being cared for.

Despite burns to her head and feet, she amazes the staff with her friendly disposition. “She was still purring, the first night. She's a very happy girl,” said hospital manager Joan Ulrich, “She's gonna be fine, all her hair's growing back already, her whiskers are growing back, she's really doing well.”

Daisy had been spotted in the neighborhood in the weeks following the explosion and people starting putting out food for her. It wasn't until last weekend animal control, along with the help of neighbors and the victims' daughters were able to catch her and bring her in to get checked out. “She has some singe on her whiskers that were burned,” said Ulrich about the cat, which incredibly was relatively unscathed, “she didn't get it as bad as Dusty got it. She's doing great…very talkative.”

Both cats are getting all the treatment and attention they need at the hospital, which will continue to care for them - free of charge- until their owners are ready for them. “The doctor would never charge them for anything,” said Ulrich about the free services, “as soon as he heard about the case, he said we're the ones open down here 24-hours, so if we can get the cats here, whatever they need, as long as they need to stay with us, they'll stay.”

A gesture the hospital staff says they're thrilled to offer, and also says the family greatly appreciates. “They call everyday, they text everyday,” said Ulrich, who says they also send pictures of the kitties, “they want to know how the cats are doing.”

While its unknown how long the cats will ultimately be there, these caregivers say they're more than happy to have them and love them for as long as necessary.

Meanwhile, the lawyer for the couple injured in the explosion say both are currently at an impatient rehab facility in Philadelphia.
