PRESS RELEASE
CORRECTED - City of Moscow Tree Commission to host Moscow Arbor Day Ceremony -
"Trees Attract Consumers to Business Areas"

April 24, 2013 (Moscow, Idaho) - The City of Moscow Tree Commission will be hosting the annual Arbor Day ceremony and tree planting at 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 26, 2013, at Friendship Square in downtown Moscow. The City's 20th Tree City USA Award will be acknowledged and presented by David Stephenson, a Private Forestry Specialist from the Idaho Department of Lands, Ponderosa Office; Mayor Nancy Chaney will read the annual Arbor Day Proclamation, and Moscow Chamber of Commerce members & ambassadors will be in attendance.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the ceremony and help plant the "Littleleaf Linden" tree, the first of several Lindens that will be replaced this year due to their serious decline related to the difficult living environment they are subjected to.

Tree seedlings will be distributed to second graders in the City on Friday by members of the Tree Commission, an AmeriCorps volunteer, and a student from the University of Idaho. An educational presentation will be made to the children when the seedlings are distributed.

Those attending can take home a free Bur-Gambel Oak, Hackberry, Black Walnut, or Bigtooth Maple seedling courtesy of the Moscow Tree Commission. The theme for this year's event is "Trees Attract Consumers to Businesses." Come out and hear about the role trees play in attracting shoppers to local business areas. The event will go on rain or shine! Entertainment and refreshments will be available.

The Tree Commission is also seeking new members to join the Commission in its endeavors to promote the City's Urban Forest and educate the public as to the benefits of strong and healthy trees. Please see additional information at the City of Moscow website under Community Forestry. Interested applicants are encouraged to fill out and submit a Commission application to Mayor Nancy Chaney for consideration. The Commission meets on the first Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. and is regularly involved in community outreach projects including the Farmer's Market, Latah County Fair, Arbor Day, and other tree-related events.
