Saturday, May 4, 2013, 8:15am till mid-afternoon. White Pine Chapter Field Trip--Tour of riparian/wetland/forest restoration project near Deary, Idaho
Co-leaders: Trish Heekin, Resource Conservation Planner, Latah Soil and Water Conservation District; and Craig Hatley, property owner.
Meet at 8:15 a.m. to arrange carpooling, Eastside Market Place, Moscow, ID (south side of the parking lot).  Participants can also meet us in Troy and Deary--we will send details on exact locations in a week. During part of the tour 4WD vehicles with high clearance will be required.

The tour is on Hatley family land about 3 miles east of Deary.  Unfortunately, the rare Leiberg's tauschia, Tauschia tenuissima, is through blooming, but we might still be able to see this small member of Apiaceae. Craig Hatley has granted White Pine Chapter access to see the continuing habitat improvements that the late George Hatley, beloved by our chapter and throughout the Palouse, began in the 1940s as erosion rehabilitation. He was assisted by his wife Iola and later, by son Craig. The multiple restoration projects moved ahead in 2007.  Latah Soil and Water Conservation District provides federal technical assistance to farmers and ranchers based on a partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.  The Hatley ranch is mixed conifer forest surrounding wet meadows, with Corral Creek running through it.  Latah SWCD's project with Craig is a riparian/wetland
restoration to improve water quality and habitat for steelhead (endangered). Craig plans to lead the tour and Trish Heekin will assist.
Bring water, lunch, snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen.  A water-repellent jacket, hat and footgear for wet and muddy conditions are also recommended. Field guides, camera, and binoculars are good additions.
