Cat rescued after two days trapped on top of a freeway sign 15ft above the road

Experts believe the cat must have been thrown off the overpass bridge

A ginger cat has been rescued after spending two days marooned on top of a freeway sign in Elkhart, Indiana.

Local police received a call last Thursday, April 11, about a cat on top of a sign near the St. Joseph Valley Parkway overpass, but officers called off their search when they couldn't find the cat.

The next day, however, the Humane Society of Elkhart County received a similar call and shelter workers spotted the orange cat sitting on top of a light on the sign, about 15 feet from the overpass.

The Humane Society of Elkhart County believe someone must have thrown the cat off the overpass bridge.

'There was no way he could have jumped that far,' Assistant Director Megan Gontermanshe told The Elkhart Truth.

The Elkhart Street Department helped retrieve the cat and he was taken to the Humane Society.

'He was a little on the dehydrated side,' Gonterman said. 'He ate right away, so he was pretty hungry, too.'

The cat, who has been named Freeway, was wearing a flea collar but had no identification tags. Gonterman said there is no other way to track down the owner.

'He was a little scared of stuff at first, but he’s a really friendly cat,' she said. 'I think he was just happy to be down.'

The Humane Society has received numerous calls from people hoping to adopt Freeway after hearing his story, but Gonterman said he is not ready for adoption yet.

'We want to hold him for a while to make sure he’s healthy and to prepare him for adoption,' she said.
