We all need to feel safe

It is difficult and intimidating to discuss the issue of responsible gun control when you have men with guns, which may or may not be loaded, just across the street from you. That was the situation on March 23 in Friendship Square, at a rally that was very poorly covered by the Daily News.
More than 100 people gathered in the square in a preplanned rally to show their support for responsible gun ownership, when four individuals with guns appeared across the street. Someone went to get police protection. Given the state of violence in our country and the history of gun attacks even in our community, some of the attendees were really worried and afraid.
Nevertheless the rally continued for 45 minutes as planned with thoughtful presentations and inspiring songs. How sad that the Daily News article about this event actually featured a photo and in-depth coverage of the men with guns rather than giving full details of the peaceful rally.
And sad, too, was the fact the protesters said they were protecting their right to bear arms and to prevent having someone take their guns away. The rally made it clear that no one was after their guns, and indeed everyone respected guns properly owned for hunting and target practice.
This was the first time I have ever seen guns displayed in Friendship Square. I hope it will be the last time, because we need honest, calm and reasoned discussion about the issues involved as we strive together to lessen the possibility of future mass killings.
We all need and deserve to feel and be safe.
