Cindy Lee Garcia sues anti-Muslim filmmaker Nakoula Basseley Nakoula 
An actress who says she was tricked into appearing in “Innocence of Muslims” is suing the filmmaker behind the anti-Muslim movie and demanding that YouTube and Google take down the film’s trailer.

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia says she never thought she’d be used as a “puppet” for Nakoula Basseley Nakoula’s “bigoted views,” which she rejects entirely, according to a suit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles County court, the Associated Press reports. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday at 8:30 a.m., Garcia’s attorney Cris Armenta told POLITICO.

Garcia said she thought she was auditioning for “a historical Arabian Desert film” called “Desert Warrior” — not “Innocence of Muslims,” which has been cited in protests at U.S. outposts around the world, including the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, and the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in which U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

Last week, federal authorities questioned Nakoula, who represented himself as Sam Bacile, in California. He was not arrested.

Armenta said she does not expect Nakoula to attend Thursday’s hearing, where Judge Ann Jones could rule on whether Google and YouTube will have to take down the trailer or will schedule another court date.

“I do not believe that he will be there. We have tried every possible method to get him notice of the hearing. I have not heard from him or anyone connected to him,” Armenta told POLITICO. “The world can’t find him and we’re part of that world.”

She said she has tried to serve him through his former criminal defense attorney and that authorities taped a notice of the hearing on the front door of his Cerritos, Calif., home. Nakoula and his relatives have since fled their home to an undisclosed location, according to the AP.

As several outlets have reported, the trailer for “Innocence of Muslims” was suspiciously dubbed, suggesting the film may have been about another subject entirely, as Garcia claims.

“Ms. Garcia was given pages of the script ‘Desert Warrior.’ There was no mention of ‘Mohammed’ during filming or on the set. There were no references made to religion nor was there any sexual content of which Ms. Garcia was aware. Mr. Bacile represented to her that the film was indeed an adventure film and about ancient Egyptians,” according to the suit.

Garcia says her life has been put in “serious, imminent danger,” exemplified by the “death threats” made against her due to the “slanderous” words “put in her mouth,” according to the suit.
