If middle class is defined as one who makes between $200,000 and $250,000, how does “and less” work?

Romney was interviewed by George Stephanopolous (spelling?). Romney said that the middle class are those making between $200,000 and $250,000 per year.

That’s out of touch!!

While I think Romney is absurdly out of touch with anyone who doesn't make mid 6-figures at least, I don't dispute that, but can we all acknowledge that there are people out there that leach off the system in one way or another? They may not live in the Hamptons, and I realize they don't make up anywhere near the 47% that Romney quoted, but they do exist. And they ruin the system for everyone.

It’s sad when it appears that some people (Mitt among them?) are wracked with terror that most everybody who gets government help is on welfare so they can somehow scam the system, take advantage of it, or make their comfy livings by leveraging the welfare system. Funny, I have personally never seen that sort of thing happening, though I suppose it’s just a matter of odds that somebody out there is happy to just take their single mom government checks and then sit on the beach in Cancun sipping Margaritas all day, saving up to buy a big yacht without lifting a finger to improve their lot in life. The last person I saw paying for food with food stamps at Safeway certainly didn’t look like they were doing anything along those lines. So, are there any hard figures out there that demonstrate how many bona fide ‘leeches’ are among the U.S. government assistance recipients-- well-off, fat and sassy-- actively finagling the system so can *avoid* ever having to have a real job? Loaded question, I know. But hey, Mitt, there might be a couple of people out there like that, ok…. that’s maybe just the cost of doing business.

Frankly, the way things are going, I’m afraid that. being a musician and academic, I might be accused of being a burden to society.
