Body found inside burning car southeast of Moscow
MOSCOW - Latah County authorities continued to investigate Saturday night a fatal vehicle fire southeast of town after police were requested earlier in the day to do a welfare check on a 29-year-old Moscow man.
Lt. Brannon Jordan of the Latah County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the vehicle involved in the fire was registered to the subject of the welfare check. Jordan said the victim's identity wouldn't be released until possibly today, pending notification of all family members and positive identification.
He said Moscow police, after being alerted by family members in the morning, were looking for the man. Authorities received reports of a fire and black smoke off Guske Road and Palouse River Drive shortly before 1 p.m.
"The fire department arrived and they found a vehicle on fire with a body inside," Jordan said. "The vehicle was fully engulfed."
Moscow police officers and sheriff's deputies responded, as did the county coroner. The vehicle is impounded, Jordan said, pending investigation by a state fire marshal.
"We don't believe this was an accidental car crash," Jordan said. He said suicide had not been ruled out. Evidence at the scene indicated the vehicle drove straight off the road, Jordan said, accelerated through a farm field, jumped a creek and hit the bank on the other side.
"It came to a stop and caught fire," Jordan said. "We still have to talk to the family and gather more information."
