[Vision2020] Top 10 Public-Paid Salaries in Idaho

Nick,

Thanks for the history on the UI Presidents and salaries. It is good to know that Zinser didn't make less than the men in the same capacity.

Personally, I don't understand what a single person could do at a college of university that makes them worth 100s of thousands. And further, what does a University President spend it on when their housing, medical, and transportation costs are paid? A person only lives so long, and the average salary in the country is 26,000 or less.

Honestly, what makes me upset about the universities and colleges is that they shift most the students to lecturers and pay the lecturers like just a few hundred dollars for each class and offer little or no benefits. Someone with a Master's degree should be making more than $20,000 a year. Yet, I see this happening all the time, and the teachers have no choice but to accept the peanuts for their labor.

PS I was just being a smart-ass with the Greek Proverb, I have to be a smart-ass sometimes. I love Greek proverbs, it is like learning from the wisdom of the ancients, which are so often right because people are people no matter where, or when, they existed.

There is a story of Socrates, he had just drunken a good deal of wine and was about to give a speech, when he stood up he belched, and then passed out on the floor. The audience gave him a standing ovation and said is was they best speech they every heard.

Hi Donovan,

When Elizabeth Zinser was hired in 1989 she made more than any of the other Idaho university executives.  Their salaries were finally equalized only after the hiring of Nellis, and now each of them make 487 percent more than President Richard Gibb made in FY82.

When I arrived at the University of Idaho in 1972, new assistant professors made $10,000 and President Ernest Hartung made $30,000.  When President Richard Gibb was hired in 1977, his salary had risen to four times that of entry level faculty. Faculty complaints became more vocal when President Elizabeth Zinser's 1993 salary was five times entry level salaries. Zinser promised that her "high tide" wage would float all faculty boats, but instead, except for a few good years, our boats have been completely swamped.

Zinser went on to Kentucky and then, still with her Idaho state senator husband (now deceased), spent her last working years at the fairly small Southern Oregon University campus. I was in touch with her when I reviewed the philosophy department program there many years ago.

Please note, Donovan, that I added "the seeds of trees" to my epigraph below, as you suggested.

Nick

A society grows great when old men plant the seeds of trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

Sue,

There is probably a law in Idaho making that illegal.

How much did President Elisabeth Zinser make in comparison to other Presidents at the time?

Wonder if there's a female CEO in Idaho who would make the list if all salaries were included?
