[Vision2020] If Teachers Worked an 8-hour Day . . .

Roger, we could get into a real snit fight over who works the hardest,
teachers or Anita, but that would obscure the relevant truth. Anita works
12 hours each day and gets paid 80% of her prior salary. That's
exploitation, pure and simple. It shouldn't be allowed to happen to anyone,
anywhere. Teachers, too, put in long, long hours. When school is out in
the summer teachers are busy taking classes, working in their classrooms,
doing research, and during the school year they often work from dawn till
long after dark and on holidays and weekends planning and doing activities
for students...raising money for my kids was the after school task I hated
the most, but it was the only way to get them to those academic competitions
which weren't funded by the school budget. But honestly, even all of that
isn't the point when we look at working conditions in the US today. For
most employees the 40 hour week no longer exists. Middle class Americans
today work longer hours and for less return on their efforts than citizens
in other industrialized countries. So let us as middle class citizens
attack the causes of exploitation and refrain from beating up on each other.

Teachers are not the only people that put in more than 8 hours. My wife is
now on 80% of pay due to the University Budget. She works about 12 hours per
day. She will probably have to go to 50% in July. So much for University pay
raises. At least teachers ger the summer off so that they can take it easy
or work at another job.
