Independent solar will cost you, though. You'll need $13-$15 thousand up front for the installation. The current costs for residential solar is about 28 cents per kilowatt hour in a sunny climate. In a cloudy climate, like Moscow in winter, it climbs to 63 cents/kwh.  You can get the same electricity from Idaho power or Avista for 7-8 cents per kwh.

Does anyone know how to get off the electrical grid? I would like to just buy some solar panels and hook them up. How many watts does it take to run a household? I saw this at Costco;
