Viva, you're truly a breath of fresh air on this forum -- not just because I agree with you, but because you make such cogent points and so in such a reasonable manner. Well done, and thanks!

So here are the real issues
There are places in this country that did not/would not issue birth certificates to certain people (usually people that they classified as coloured)
There are places in this country that people do not need an ID to live (they don't drive!)
In order to get an ID proving you are a citizen, you have to pay -- this is a poll tax. Issue passports for free and this argument goes awayWhen you lose you papers (those tornadoes recently remind me of this), it is very difficult to prove (document) and until you can recreate your papers, you are disfranchised even if they know you at the polling place.
Voter fraud is not a problem in this country. If it were, a real solution would be the federal government providing a database of citizens at the polling place. Registering seems silly and antiquated. There is little to stop someone in registering in multiple states and voting multiple times. Showing an ID at the polling place does nothing to stop this.

As for having to prove your age to drink....that is not the law. Those places are covering their own asses. They can be fined if they serve someone underage, and obviously to them, you look underage. When your face wrinkles and your hair grays, this too will pass.

If anything, the only voting problem we have is people NOT voting. But I grew up in Australia where you have to vote or you are fined.
