I wouldn't eat any meat from any fast food place. I don't even think the cow's own mother would recognize it after what has been done to it in those places.

Food safety is a mayor problem and inspections need to be increased. The condemnation of "Pink Slime" however is erroneous. It is an unfortunate nick name for Finely textured Beef. Itis a valid meat product no different than any other beef product and it reduces the amount of fat in the final product.

Test variability is rarely included in most conversations and is not well understood
by 90 plus percent of US adults so the concept of 'false' positive is lost on most
people. Typically the false positive is not discovered until after the recall wheels
have already been put into motion and your company, product and employees are already

Costs obviously depend on the particular circumstances, including the scope of the
necessary recall (e.g., distributor level, retail, or consumer); the implicated
product (e.g., lot, batch, geographic scope, amount in production, etc.); and the
level of oversight required. Class I recalls (like E. Coli contamination) are usually
costly, partly because of the urgency. Whether Taylor Farms could recover losses
in a legal challenge is a fact-specific inquiry. Perhaps an FTCA claim could be
lurking for negligent testing, but issues of immunity would arise. Based on public
info concerning the Taylor recall, a voluntary recall is probably just the cost

What's the cost of an unnecessary recall and who pays for it?
Taylor Farms' recall of bagged salad was based on a false positive result for E.coli from state lab. Are recalls from false positives just the cost of doing business or is there a better way of handling this?
Here are some comments from our LinkedIn Group and FoodSafetyTech.com:
Test variability is rarely included in most conversations and is not well understood by 90 plus percent of US adults so the concept of 'false' positive is lost on most people. Typically the false positive is not discovered until after the recall wheels have already been put into motion and your company, product and employees are already being dragged through the media meat grinder. There is no way to put that horse back into the barn. Lawyer up, it's the American way! --Posted by Jim Loseke
Costs obviously depend on the particular circumstances, including the scope of the necessary recall (e.g., distributor level, retail, or consumer); the implicated product (e.g., lot, batch, geographic scope, amount in production, etc.); and the level of oversight required. Class I recalls (like E. Coli contamination) are usually costly, partly because of the urgency. Whether Taylor Farms could recover losses in a legal challenge is a fact-specific inquiry. Perhaps an FTCA claim could be lurking for negligent testing, but issues of immunity would arise. Based on public info concerning the Taylor recall, a voluntary recall is probably just the cost of doing business. --Posted by Peter Arhangelsky
