"Atheism can mean a lack of belief in the existence of God or gods"

No, it cannot, and is not listed as that from any creditable source, because it would render the word "atheist" meaningless. Theists and agnostics can also lack belief in the existence of a God or Gods. So, if they all do, none have any meaning of separation with that definition.

Atheist literally means "without God" from its Greek origin. " A" means without, and "theist", means God or divine entity.

If you believe that there is the possibility of a God, then you do not lack belief that there is a God.

Atheism is the belief there is no God.

Atheism can mean a lack of belief in the existence of God or gods,
with no redefining necessary. That's what it means in my case. As
someone who lacks belief in the existence of God or gods, it is
possible to acknowledge that he/she/it/they might exist, without
logical contradiction.

I also lack belief in the existence of a mauve hippogriff orbiting
Betelgeuse, while acknowledging the possible existence of said
hippogriff.
