Some Salmonella rates rise, CDC reports

Here's the good news: The overall incidence of reported
illnesses linked to one of six of the most common foodborne
pathogens dropped by 23% between 1996-1998 and 2010, according to
a CDC report.

The report, one of the most in-depth analyses of foodborne
illness outbreaks published to date, included data from the
Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network on illnesses
caused by Campylobacter, Listeria, Salmonella, Shiga-toxin
producing E. coli O157, Yersinia, and Vibrio. (Not included were
other varieties of E. coli, such as the "Big Six" strains being
targeted by the USDA in beef, or norovirus, which, as its name
indicates, is a virus and not a bacterium.)

California dairy's product gets green light after third
outbreak Art: Stock art of cow being milked

California food safety officials recently lifted the
statewide quarantine on all raw milk products produced by Organic
Pastures of Fresno County, a little more than a week after it was
imposed in the wake of 10 cases of Campylobacter-related illness
linked to the dairy's products.

It was the third time the dairy had run afoul of food safety. In
late 2011, five children became ill from E. coli
0157:H7-contaminated milk, and Campylobacter turned up in the
dairy's raw cream in 2008.

But the debate over the risks involved in consuming raw milk is
far from over.
