[Vision2020] A literate rewriting of my Co-op message

Bill, obviously you have a serious conflict. Will they put your name on the
ballot?

R-
Responding to your questions....
I believe the Co-op elections committee can run an honest election
This situation arose from excess caution on the part of the board. To
summarize, the Co-op board accepted a plan to limit eligibility for those
running for the Co-op board. In a desire to make sure everything was
smooth, they decided that prospective board members must not have a
"conflict of interest" with the Co-op (some kind of serious disagreement),
and that people who had been employees, or who had applied for employment,
at the Co-op might have such a conflict of interest, therefore anyone in
those categories (employed at Co-op or applied for job at Co-op during the
last 2 years) could not run for election.
A number of us (Co-op members) learned of this ruling and protested. Five
of us wrote letters to the editor of the Co-op newsletter. GM Seth
Marcantonio, with support of the board, censored those letters. As editor,
I resigned in protest. I decided that the board was responsible for both
the eligibility ruling and the manager's censorship, so I am now running for
a place on the board.

So, per my usual rapid write and run response (although perhaps worse this
time since I had a baking project concurrent with my message and the oven
timer was binging at me) let me correct my sloppy text.

Who will monitor both the voting and the counting of ballots to
ensure that the integrity of the election is maintained? If the current
Board is operating as
described it certainly would not be helpful to them to have new
board members elected who disagree with their policies and management. And,
for those of us outside the inner co-op circle, what events
and/or attitudes precipitated this sad turn of events?

Save OUR Food Coop

The Moscow Food Co-op Board of Directors supported censorship of the
Co-op's newsletter, when five letters to the editor from Co-op
members were deleted from the January 2012 issue. That censorship
resulted in editor Bill London resigning in protest.

The Moscow Food Co-op Board of Directors has made significant
decisions in isolation, without allowing member input, in clear
violation of the Co-op mission. For example, in December of 2011,
the board ruled, with no previous announcement or opportunity for
member involvement, that members who had been Co-op employees or even
job applicants in the last 2 years were NOT eligible to be board
candidates. Well-prepared candidates, including former Co-op board
president Bill Beck and local farmer and former board member Margo
Kay (who had both applied for Co-op jobs within the last two years)
were not allowed to run for election.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

See www.saveourfoodcoop.com

Vote for a new board.
Vote at the Co-op during the week of March 6 through 12, for board
candidates Kurt (Sam) Obermayr and Bill London.
