More shocking to my friends:
When Reagan first proposed Workfare, I was totally against it. Now I believe there are some Workfare programs beneficial to the participants and the country in general.
Such programs need careful design and planning so as to achieve the goals of producing people that can support or at least partially support themselves and their families. Bur such programs are not for all welfare recipients.

Things are really in a bad way, Tom, when one of my least-favorite politicians ever, Ronald Reagan, appears to be a paragon of rationality next to his GOP comrades today.

"…the United states could be forced to default on its obligations for the first time in its history.
This country now possesses the strongest credit in the world. The full consequence of a default--or even the serious prospect of default--by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate….The risks, the costs, the disruptions, and the incalculable damage lead me to but one conclusion: the Senate must pass this legislation before the Congress adjourns."
