MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HUMAN RIGHTS COMMUNITY BREAKFAST SATURDAY, JAN. 14, 9am - Speakers Freedom Riders, Helen and Robert Singleton

Dear Friends:

The Latah County Human Rights Task Force is pleased to announce that the keynote speakers for this year’s Martin Luther King Human Rights Community Breakfast will be Helen and Robert Singleton, who were among the 1961 Civil Rights Freedom Riders, whose bravery and commitment helped advance the breakdown of segregation in U.S. South.

The Breakfast will be held on Saturday, January 14th at the Moscow Jr. High School at 9am. In addition to the speakers, the event includes a full breakfast, entertainment by Moscow High School Glee Club, presentation of two Rosa Parks Human Rights Achievement Awards and announcement of winners of the Martin Luther King Jr. Art & Essay Contest.

Tickets cost $ 8 general and $ 4 for students including UI and WSU students. A ticket form is attached for you to print out and send in, or tickets can be purchased at Paradise Ridge CD’s 117 East 3rd St. Please buy your tickets soon. The event sells out and it really helps us plan to have an early ticket count.

More about the speakers: Dr. and Mrs. Singleton were involved in the Civil Rights movement as activists in the early 1960’s, challenging Los Angeles’ discrimination practices in restaurant service, apartment rentals, barber shops and department stores. In 1961, as students, they recruited and joined the Freedom Riders to test unlawful discrimination in travel accommodations in the south. On July 30, they were arrested in Jackson, Mississippi and, along with more than 300 Freedom Riders, were tried, fined and incarcerated at Parchman Penitentiary. Their activities challenged Mississippi and other southern states to comply with two U.S. Supreme Court decision ruling racial segregation unconstitutional in interstate travel. This and other civil rights strategies led to enactment of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which helped to end discrimination and began the break down of barriers to equality and justice.

We hope you will be able to attend this special annual event to join with your neighbors in affirming the ideals of human rights, justice and equality inspired by the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Students from the Moscow High School International and Human Rights Clubs help decorate and serve the breakfast. Support for the Breakfast is received from the City of Moscow and the University of Idaho. All profits from the event are used to fund human rights educational programs for the youth of Latah County.
