[Vision2020] SBOE

If I was in ASUI when this happened I would get "Flagship University" adopted into our motto and place it in every conspicuous location on campus and on all our publications and encourage the faculty, staff, and student living groups and organizations to do the same. Maybe even get it engraved above the door of every student owned building, like the Idaho Commons, the Kibbie Dome, SUB, and the Student Rec. Center. But then again, maybe that rebellious attitude I have against oppressive authorities is why I was always in trouble with the administration.

Couldn't we put through a motion to change the State of Idaho's mission statement to show that it is the "flagship" State of the University of Idaho?  Since the University pre-dates the State and all.

According to Vandal Venue, the motion to remove "flagship" designation passed unanimously.  President Nellis posted this before the vote on Facebook:

At the State Board meeting in Boise today, the Board proposed that the University of Idaho remove the term “Flagship” from our mission statement. I am VERY opposed to this change and have expressed my strong concerns to the Board regarding this proposal. The fact remains: we are THE University of Idaho. We were established before Idaho was a state and we have been educating the best and bright...est students and developing new and innovative ideas and knowledge that fuel our state’s economy and improve our quality of life for 122 years. The term flagship reflects the University of Idaho's unique position as the state's first university. It also reflects the leadership role land grant universities – established by the Morrill Act – play by virtue of their statewide mission and their significant levels of competitive research. Over 70% of the competitive research in Idaho is occurring at the University of Idaho. Our charter is to serve our state
and to lead. We do that today as the state’s flagship research university."

I hope our university president is up on this so he can put the kibosh to it.

And he’d better put the kibosh to it.

A motion was made before the SBOE yesterday to remove the "flagship" designation from the University of Idaho Mission Statement.  According to posters on Vandal Venue, the SBOE will vote on the motion later today.  Looks like those who want it done will prevail.
