[Vision2020] Not All Police Departments are as Efficient as the MPD

This wouldn't have been quite so funny if they hadn't blocked traffic, casually walked up to a car that possibly held a suspect from a home invasion robbery but that they blithely assumed was empty, and precipitated a firefight in dense rush hour traffic.  I hate to see them be ridiculed for acting cautiously when the facts that they had at the time warranted it.

Police block rush hour traffic, backing up the freeway for miles, during a two-hour standoff . . . with an empty car.

No one found inside car after standoff

SAN DIEGO - A standoff on eastbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa ended without anyone taken into custody.

Two hours after officers drew their guns on a dark-colored sedan parked on the freeway near Severin Drive, Fox 5's helicopter showed that no one was discovered inside.

Officers slowly approached the car and smashed several driver-side windows.  A canine was seen jumping into the front of the car to discover that the vehicle was empty.

Officers initially reported that a home invasion robbery suspect refused orders to get out of the car stopped near Severin Drive in La Mesa around 4:40 p.m.

California Highway Patrol was called to assist San Diego Police Department, according to CHP officer Larry Landeros.

Traffic on the freeway was heavily congested for miles to the west as two lanes on the interstate were closed while police took up positions around the suspect's vehicle.

"Officers are taking precautionary actions to get this all resolved peacefully," Landeros said.

Details regarding the home invasion robbery were not immediately released.

Lt. David Rohowits says the suspect was going to be arrested at his parole officers, but the suspect called ahead to the meeting reporting his car broke down on the 8 freeway. Officers rushed on scene, but were unable to arrest the suspect.

Investigators don’t believe the suspect was tipped off to the arrest, but warn the suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

Police say they will not release anymore information about the suspect because they are still in an active search for the suspect.
