Bob,

Here is the article I mentioned: "Do Guns Make you Safer?" from the
Philosopher's Stone.

http://azjauthor.blogspot.com/2012/01/do-guns-make-you-safe.html

The article is much broader than the topic you are interested in but it is
a very nice article with lots of information relevant to these debates.
Here is a passage about your concern:

"One other factor, which is harder to nail down, is about crimes that are
completely averted because of the presence of a gun. In a 1994 study,
criminologist Gary Kleck indicated
<http://www.rense.com/general76/univ.htm>that he believed (based on
survey data) that somewhere between 800,000 and
2.5 million crimes were averted because of the presence of a gun. (Oddly,
many of those citing him, including
Wikipedia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Kleck>,
reference only the 2.5 million number. Biased much?)"

There are some sources noted here that you can just click on when you get
to the article and there are other interesting sources noted, as well.

Best, Joe
