Students Return To School
The familiar site of school buses transporting students to school for classes returned to Newtown's roads on Tuesday, December 18. By 8:30 buses were ferrying students to Newtown High School, Newtown Middle School, Reed Intermediate School, Hawley Elementary School, and Middle Gate Elementary School.
Sandy Hook School students will return to school in Monroe once the district's preparations at Monroe's Chalk Hill Elementary School are finalized. First Selectman Pat Llodra had announced on Sunday that the formerly closed school in Newtown's neighboring town would be reopened for the use of Sandy Hook students. Newtown's Board of Selectman, Board of Education, Board of Finance, and Legislative Council met during a joint emergency meeting Monday night, following Governor Dannel P. Malloy signing an executive order suspending and modifying certain state statutes to permit the Town of Newtown and Town of Monroe to enter into an agreement to immediately allow Newtown the use of Monroe's Chalk Hill Middle School.
Classes at Head O' Meadow Elementary School were cancelled today following what turned out to be a prank call. The prank phone call came in before buses arrived at the school in the morning, according to the Board of Education, and, as a result, Head O' Meadow School has remained closed for the day.
One unfamiliar site on Tuesday were lines of reporters and banks of camera crews and their vehicles across the street from schools, and remarkably heavier traffic conditions than normal.

Many parents could be see holding their child's hand to walk them to school at Hawley Elementary School, as cars and buses pulled into the school's driveway.
On Monday, December 17, Newtown High School Principal Charles Dumais posted a message to students, staff and parents on the high school's blog.
"Our staff has worked with clinicians and counselors from across the country to prepare for the return of our students. We are taking advantage of all of the resources available to us now and preparing to continue to offer the highest levels of support possible after they leave," wrote Mr Dumais.
Mr Dumais continued later in the message, "Counseling staff will be available for students, staff, and parents throughout the day."
Tuesday, Mr Dumais said, was a day to start healing.
As at the other schools, media was not allowed on the campus, and a police cruiser was stationed to monitor incoming traffic.
"Our collective strength and resilience will serve as an example to the rest of the world. Be strong, Newtown," wrote Mr Dumais.
